Established in 1989, Alpha Domus has always been inspired to create beautiful wines of worth, quality and expert craftsmanship paramount. Proudly a New Zealand family owned vineyard, ‘Alpha’ is derived from the names of the founders and ‘Domus’ is Latin for home.
The horticultural family saw the potential of the land for viticulture believing it offered a climatic and soil profile that had the potential to produce world class wines.
Pioneers in the area they established one of the first wineries and were instrumental in the formation of The Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District, giving the sub-region an identity as a premium winegrowing area of Hawke’s Bay.
The passion and commitment that drove the family back then continues today. Alpha Domus remains a 100 percent family-owned and operated winery producing classic enjoyable wines.
The first vines in Hawke’s Bay were planted by French missionaries in the 1850s and it is the only region in New Zealand to continuously produce wine for the last 160 years.
In 1895, Government Viticulturist, Romeo Bragatto declared Hawke’s Bay “…the most suitable for vine growing I have visited in New Zealand… by reason of the nature of the soil, natural drainage and sufficiency of heat.”
Today Hawke’s Bay is world-renowned for the quality of both red and white wines and is the standard-bearer for New Zealand claret-style reds and Syrah.
